A Lesson from Tennis on What Actually Matters
One of my passions is tennis. I play regularly and I love watching matches either in person or on TV. It has been an inspiring teacher for me. Many lessons you learn on the tennis courts, whether you are playing or watching, can be applied to your life, your career and your business. Take this one, for example: you can win a tennis match, even a grand slam final, by winning fewer points! Let that sink in for a moment. You can win fewer points and still hold the trophy and get the big payout! Tennis is not about winning every single point. It is about winning the ones that matter the most: the deciding points, the break points, the deciding games. And this is true for many areas of life. You can win a battle or more and still lose the war. You can win the popular vote and still lose the presidency, or you can lose the popular vote and still win the presidency (5 US presidents did this). At the personal level, countless people are juggling hundreds of tasks every day and still making zero progress towards achieving what they truly want! We live in a culture that values being busy and doing hard work above all else. That kind of thinking only leads to stress, exhaustion, dissatisfaction and feeling unfulfilled in one’s work.
Stop Doing More. Start Doing What Actually Matters.
I see this all the time among my clients, my friends and colleagues. And I, myself, have been there, done that. The end result of this: I burned out! And I didn’t create what I wanted. Here is what I learned and want to help you figure out: Most of what we do doesn’t matter. We do them out of habits, out of peer pressure. We are running outdated programs based on beliefs passed down to us by whomever.
Here is what can happen when I challenge you to take a hard look at all the busy work you do and support you in letting go of what makes you look busy. You can triple your revenues in two years while working fewer hours and having more time for your partner, your family, your hobbies, … You will have more fulfillment, more joy and energy. It really isn’t about working harder. It is about knowing which points win the match and having the courage to focus only on those. What are your three points?
